The Basket Weave Crochet Stitch is a beautiful and textured stitch pattern that adds depth and elegance to any crochet project. Known for its woven appearance, this stitch is a favorite for making cozy blankets, scarves, cushions, and even dishcloths. Its unique 3D texture is created by alternating front post and back post double crochets, giving it the rich, layered look of a real basket weave.
One of the reasons crocheters love this stitch is its versatility. Although it looks intricate, the Basket Weave Stitch follows a repetitive pattern that becomes quite relaxing once you get into the rhythm. Whether you’re an experienced crocheter or an adventurous beginner ready to learn post stitches, this tutorial will help you create projects that are both functional and decorative.

Chain Instructions:
Start by chaining in multiples of 8 plus 4.
For example: I am doing 36 chains (8 x 4 = 32 + 4 = 36).
Section One:
-
In the 4th chain from the hook (the starting chain counts as your first stitch), double crochet (dc) in each stitch across.
-
Ch 3 and turn. (The chain 3 counts as your first dc)
-
FPDC around the next 4 dc, then BPDC around the next 4 dc.
-
Repeat from * to * across the row. In the last stitch (the turning chain), make 1 dc.
-
Ch 3 and turn.
-
FPDC around the first 4 dc, BPDC around the next 4 dc, repeat across, and dc in the top of the turning chain in the last stitch.
-
Ch 3 and turn.
-
Repeat this row 3 more times for a total of 4 rows.
This completes your first “section” of the basket weave.
Section Two:
-
BPDC around the first 4 dc, FPDC around the next 4 dc, and repeat across.
-
Dc in the top of the turning chain in the last stitch.
-
Repeat this row 3 more times, for a total of 4 rows.
Continuing the Basket Weave Stitch:
Continue to repeat Section One and Section Two alternately until you reach your desired length.
